Humble Design: From Homeless to Hopeful
How do you find balance while running Humble? Balance is an elusive mirage on the horizon. We are all chasing it and will never stop if we love our families and our jobs. Chasing it is the important thing though — never give up drawing a line in the sand. I find balance in leaning on my husband Rob for help.

Festivities begin Saturday, with an open-to-all party featuring surprise guests at the bar from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrations will continue throughout the year, with specials like Doyle dollar dog days, and will culminate on St. Patrick’s Day. But it’s interacting with everyday people that Doyle loves best. On Saturdays and on St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Day. On those occasions, the bar is often packed with his regulars who’ve become friends and his friends who’ve become regulars. He’s also met Chase Utley, watched Jason Kelce play cards in McGillin’s, and worked the bar during the Phillies 2008 World Series parade, the busiest day he’s ever seen.
Of course, we have no proof that he doesn’t either.

Doyle earned a "Best of Philly" award in 2010 when he was named the city's best bartender, and his wife, Laura Doyle, said all these years later she doesn't mind sharing him with the rest of the city. As Doyle gets ready to turn 80, he's scaled back his schedule to one day a week, but he's now worked for three generations of owners, and his tenure has spanned eight Philadelphia mayors. He's also served then Vice President Joe Biden and many other national politicians, athletes and celebrities. Expect Irish pub classics, like the ever-popular Mile High Meatloaf and Shepherd’s Pie, plus Americana bar bites—everything from burgers to pizza and wings (just 35 cents per plate, if you come on a Tuesday night). Ma McGillin finally passed away in 1937 at the ripe old age of 90, passing management of McGillin’s along to her daughter, Mercedes McGillin Hooper, one of 13 children to be raised on the bar’s second floor. Hooper ran the establishment with her nephew Doc for the next 21 years before selling it to brothers Henry Spaniak and Joe Shepaniak (who spelled their names differently) in 1958.

Where To Eat And Drink During A Snowstorm
And that’s how Doyle, 79, a married father of two and grandfather of four, came to be the longest-serving bartender at Philly’s oldest-operating bar. This month marks 50 years for Doyle at McGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860, and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong party in his honor. He started going to the storied Center City bar regularly on Friday nights in the early ‘70s, when his wife would go to her mother’s house to do laundry. The signs of defunct businesses, like department stores Lit Brothers and Gimbels, show the tavern’s lasting power. Mullins said that when the Strawbridge & Clothier store at 8th and Market Streets closed in 2006, employees brought one of its exterior, circular stone signs to be hung there.
While young 20-somethings fill the place for karaoke on Friday nights, happy hours at McGgillin’s are typically filled with a very diverse crowd. There is a ship bell and a cow bell behind the bar which the bartenders ring when they get a great tip. They also ring it to "gong" or "boo" a bad karaoke singer. During a Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Union, or Philadelphia Flyers game, it can be expected that the bell will be rung when the home team scores. McGillin’s made history – celebrated 150th anniversary with giant party, visit from Budweiser Clydesdales and introduction of McGillin’s 1860 IPA. J.E. Caldwell, a jeweler in business since 1839, closes.
If you ever visit McGillin’s — and you should if you can — their exclusive McGillin’s 1860 IPA is the beer to order. Back when I was in college they had some sort of ridiculous Friday night wings special — 100 wings for $10? — that never ceased to seem too good to be true. John Doyle is considered an icon in Philadelphia. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern. Billing itself as the bar that “outlasted the Civil War and even Prohibition,” McGillin’s Old Ale House, the oldest continuously operating bar in Philadelphia, is a major point of pride for natives of the city.
Its beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. McGillin’s has outlasted Strawbridge’s, the Civil War and even Prohibition. McGillin’s celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010. McGillin’s Olde Ale House threw open its doors the year Lincoln was elected president. That’s shortly after the Liberty Bell cracked and long before ground was broken for Philadelphia City Hall. The beer taps have been flowing since 1860 — making it the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia and one of the oldest taverns in the country.

John Wanamaker, whose flagship department store was nearby, was said to be a frequent customer. “We have heard stories that he did, I assume, in his younger years as he died during prohibition,” said Mullins. And even after the holiday, there’s no rest for the weary. Murph’s is an Irish pub in Fishtown that also happens to make some of our favorite Italian food in the city. Besides being one of the oldest bars in Philly, McGillin’s in Midtown Village is also the entire city’s favorite place to day drink and watch sports. If you’re in Philly during football or baseball season and can’t get tickets to the real thing, there’s no better place to be. They also have a fireplace, so it’s especially useful in the winter when all of the outdoor beer gardens are closed and day drinking options have dwindled. McGillin’s has been featured on numerous “Best Of” lists, including being named one of the “14 coolest bars in America” by Gourmet magazine and one of the “50 best Irish pubs in America” by Complex magazine. In addition to these accolades, it boasts a collection of iconic vintage Philadelphia signs from bygone stores and businesses, like Woolworth's and the John Wanamaker Department Store.

For its annual holiday celebrations, the city’s oldest tavern expects so many customers its restrooms cannot accommodate them. The bar stocks a great selection of local beers like Yuengling, Yards and Victory, while the televisions are always tuned to the most important local sporting event. In 2013, Gourmet magazine called McGillin's one of the three coolest bars in the United States.
“Room for improvement.” Philly restaurateurs present case for making streeteries process better
Mullins said many Irish tourists visiting Philadelphia stop by the tavern, which can be hard to find, as Drury Street is a small side street. Prior to cell phones, many customers or potential customers could wander for a while before they found it. In 2003, a business older than McGillin’s, J.E. Caldwell, a jeweler who started in 1839, closed, and its sign was added to the collection. This year, the tavern will feature a twist on the traditional Irish Coffee, called a Nutty Irishman Coffee. It is the same as the Irish Coffee but with an added shot of Frangelico (hazelnut liquor).

Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. That was the extent of Doyle’s application and interview process.

During Prohibition, Ma McGillin hires a chef. Serves food and ice cream and perhaps, a few tea cups were tipped on the second floor. McGillin’s is only closed a few days a year – and Thanksgiving is one of them.
More than 100 years ago, Christopher’s grandparents immigrated to America making McGillin’s especially proud to be part of this campaign that helps immigrants get a fighting chance here. McGillin’s served blue beer in honor of Villanova’s National Basketball Championship in 2016 and again in 2018. Le Bec Fin, which kicked off Philadelphia’s restaurant renaissance in 1970, closes and its sign is added to collection at McGillin’s. Third generation of Spaniak family joins management team at McGillin’s — Christopher Mullins, Jr., son of Mary Ellen & Chris Mullins & grandson of Henry Spaniak.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Museums & Attractions in Philly
As with most bars and restaurants whose reputations precede them, crowds are commonplace at McGillin’s. Don’t expect lighting-speed service if your visit falls during a weekend or weeknight special (which is basically every day, considering there’s always something on offer). That said, the staff hustle hard to keep service moving. If you can, seek out a barstool in front of barman John Doyle, who’s as much legend as the place itself (he’s been behind the bar at McGillin’s for more than 40 years). In 1910, the bar celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new brick facade and officially changed its name to McGillin’s Olde (the "e" seems to have been dropped in recent years) Ale House.
Initially called The Bell in Hand, the famous pub opened its doors in 1860 in the home of Irish immigrant William "Pa" McGillin, the owner and operator of the establishment. It was nicknamed McGillin's by those who frequented the establishment, and the bar took on the title as its official name. The Sons of Ben, a supporter group of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, was created at McGillin’s! Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and David Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, the 301st anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan Ethan Gomberg suggested the name.
So one night when the doorman had to use the bathroom, he asked Doyle to watch the door and he did. “I would stand by the door, look around, and just have a couple of drinks,” he said. Mulllins does not have children, but said he has many nieces and nephews who might someday carry on the family tradition of hosting an Irish pub. In 1993, Mullins’ parents, Chris Sr. and Henry’s daughter, Mary Ellen Spaniak Mullins, bought the tavern when the city was again on shaky economic ground. A comeback that begun under Mayor Ed Rendell’s administration benefitted McGillin’s and every other restaurant and bar in the city.

Bee has locked herself in her room, and like Agnes, avoids the downstairs chaos. Agnes makes Bee leave the house, telling her not to come back for a while. Then in 1973, Arthur Gale's sister Marcia and her husband Orin N. Chadbourne, who had owned and managed it since Arthur's death in 1957, sold the property. The hotel struggled under a series of owners until 1985 when Portland developers Barton A. Forbes and Michael Marino purchased it. Under their thoughtful and knowledgeable direction, the century-old hotel has undergone a multi-million dollar restoration which has returned it to the appearance and operation at the height of its popularity. (Other changes he implemented involved installing such iconic features like the expansive verandah and historic elevator.) But Arthur’s momentous stewardship of the Eagle Mountain House came to an unfortunate end with his death in 1957. His sister, Marcia Gale Chadbourne, and her family carried on his legacy for the next few decades, until her retirement during the 1970s. The Chadbournes subsequently sold their interest in the resort to a new ownership group, thus marking the end of nearly 90 years of continuous operation by the same family. Nevertheless, the Eagle Mountain House managed to preserve its fantastic reputation.
Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club has a history and heritage as rich as that of Jackson, NH itself. The extension of rail service to Bartlett in the mid-1800s transformed the idyllic artists' colony of Jackson Village into a tourist destination. By 1890, the property had expanded to Eagle Hall and Eagle Mountain House with lodging for 125 guests. Both the Hall and House were destroyed by a fire in May 1915; the barn and garage, located a short distance from the main hotel buildings, were spared.

In doing so, he gave the Eagle Mountain House its well-known colonial-inspired appearance. Over the following years, Arthur Gale continued to enhance the appeal of the Eagle Mountain House as its national reputation grew stronger. Indeed, he specifically commissioned yet another massive renovation on the eve of the Great Depression that practically doubled the size of the building.

Devastated by the fire and with his health declining, Cyrus Gale sold the property to his son Arthur, who designed the current Eagle Mountain House in Colonial Revival style and selected Roswell Ward of Intervale to complete the construction. To reduce the risk of the new hotel experiencing the same fate as the first and many others of the era, Arthur installed the first fire suppression system in a New Hampshire resort. Under Arthur Gale's ownership, the hotel doubled in size with an addition to the southern end completed in 1929, matching the design and materials used in the original construction. Found in the heart of the White Mountains, the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club sits on a scenic hilltop in Jackson, New Hampshire.

The building first opened its doors at the start of the Gilded Age, when the surrounding White Mountains were rapidly transforming into a premier vacation hotspot. Artists in particular were among the people to visit the most frequently, often staying in barns while seeking unique natural landmarks to paint. Recognizing the economic potential all those tourists represented, local entrepreneurs began to construct their own inns and hotels. Two people to pursue this line of work were Cyrus and Marcia Gale, who converted their family’s farmhouse in Jackson, New Hampshire, into a hotel called the “Eagle Mountain House” during the 1870s. The Gale’s farm quickly became one of the most popular places to stay in the region, especially since it was located deep in the wilderness. In fact, most guests could only reach the retreat after following a trail that cut deep through the verdant woodland outside of downtown Jackson.

To host the sheer number of travelers interested in staying at the Eagle Mountain House, the Gales eventually enlarged the building considerably to the point where it could entertain some 125 tenants. In fact, the Eagle Mountain House had expanded into an actual resort, which offered all kinds of recreational activities to experience on-site. Some of the events included dance parties that the hotel organized with its own orchestra. It even managed to be self-sufficient, with the Gales using the surrounding farmland as a reliable source for food.
Golf was quickly increasing in popularity and in 1931, Arthur converted a portion of the property’s farmland and pasture into a nine-hole golf course. Today, the Eagle Mountain House Golf Club leases the course from local ownership and is responsible for maintenance and operation during the golf season. In the winter, the course serves as a vital section of the nationally acclaimed Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s extensive cross-country trail network. The Chadbournes continued to operate the property and make improvements. In addition, the original hotel rooms were renovated to include private baths and in 1959, the swimming pool was added. With the Chadbournes’ retirement in 1973, the hotel left Gale family ownership for the first time in over 90 years when it was sold to the Clarkes and Kenyons.

Vista offers a high-end experience on a beautifully designed ship, but you'll have a choice in how you spend your vacation budget rather than paying upfront for all-inclusive fares. Vista is an elegant mid-size cruise ship that's the perfect home base for travelers who appreciate dining variety, enjoy interesting cocktails and fine wines and wish to explore the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. When the ship is in international waters, young adults ages 18 to 20 may purchase and drink beer or wine (as well as the House Select beverage package). Vista's cabins and suites offer electrical outlets and USB ports on both sides of the bed and by the desk. Americans may want to bring an adapter for charging devices in public rooms where the outlets are all European-style.
From the Oceania Cruises Blog
While we enjoyed every meal and loved the variety, we weren't always blown away by main courses (though some are standouts), and desserts were lacking. Spa treatments and shore excursions seem overpriced for the industry, and service is not as proactive as one might expect on so small and nice a ship. Many on our cruise complained about long waits for service for food and drink. Cabins are spacious and nicely appointed -- a welcome change from the R-class's tight fits -- and the suites are gorgeous. Four specialty restaurants -- French, Italian, Asian and steak -- supplement the main restaurant nicely and provide welcome dining variety.
Oceania Cruises destinations
It was the perfect amount of space for me, but I could see how a couple might fight over the drawer space. I failed to find anything serious to critique about Vista, so what I didn't love about the ship is more about my personality than any real failing of the cruise line. There are no children's facilities onboard, and the prevailing atmosphere is one best suited to adults -- though children between age 1 and 18 can technically sail with the line if accompanied by adults. The lead ship in Oceania's new Allura-class, Vista will be joined by a sister-ship, perhaps unsurprisingly named Allura, in 2025.
Small, Luxurious Ships
Perhaps it's because I love Asian food, but I have a hard time choosing what to eat at Red Ginger because everything looks so good. The stunning wall mosaics set the tone for the sophisticated spread you can sample here. Think daily sushi, an array of fine cheeses, made-to-order omelets, pasta and steaks and premium ice cream (including one Humphry Slocombe flavor at lunch and dinner). The vegetarian options weren't always the best at the Terrace Café, though it often had gluten-free pasta.

Passengers typically do dress up, by their own choice, for occasions like a night dining in Jacques Pepin's onboard restaurant, and you won't see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or tennis shoes in the dining venues. "Our new Tropics and Exotics Collection is one of our most exciting yet, featuring a heady mix of iconic cities, remote islands and hidden gems to discover for the very first time," commented Frank A Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises. The current OLife promotion runs through June 30 and includes round-trip airfare and transfers, plus your choice of four shore excursions, a beverage package or $400 onboard credit per cabin. Starting in July, the line will offer a set of included perks, without the need to choose, but the actual inclusions may change during promotional periods. Other amenities include a welcome bottle of Champagne, pashmina-style cashmere lap blankets for use in your cabin and a tote bag. Vista is clearly a ship for travelers who love to explore new destinations, prioritize fine dining and premium beverages and immerse themselves in chic surroundings.
Passengers tend to be 50-plus and well traveled, hailing mostly from the U.S. and Canada; generally, the longer the cruise, the older the cruiser. The line also draws travelers from the U.K., Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. While it was perhaps not my favorite dining venue on board, the salmon I ordered was cooked perfectly, so moist and tender that I raved about it for the rest of the cruise. Folks at my table ordered everything from filet mignon to a whole Maine lobster, and everyone was satisfied with their choices. Past Oceania cruisers might wonder where Waves' famous smoothies and power bowls got to.

Freshly-baked produce of all kinds is available here from morning until evening. The croissants are authentically French, thanks to ingredients imported directly from France, while the beignets will have you thinking you've stumbled onto Bourbon Street. Passengers will also find plenty of power options, from North American and European-style outlets to USB and Lightning charging ports that are located literally everywhere you could think of. The line's Culinary Center has been dramatically expanded aboard Vista, and features interactive cooking stations with induction ranges next to an adjacent classroom for demonstrations and presentations. Everything about Vista feels, well, la dolce vita -- for a fraction of the price. If there's an immediate con of the ship, it's that ceilings in general in several public spaces feel rather low compared with other vessels.
Designed to help you create your perfect cruise experience, our onboard packages elevate your journey and offer extraordinary value. Sip your favorite cocktail poolside, enjoy the perfect vintage with dinner every evening and stay connected with friends and family back home. Passengers on Riviera are older -- expect most to fall into the 65-plus category, though the age skews younger when itineraries are shorter.
During the winter, Oceania spans the globe with sailings to Asia, Australia, South America, Panama Canal, and the Caribbean. As for amenities, it is included in the ticket prices for all staterooms (suite and cabin categories) and on all itineraries. In April 2018, Oceania Cruises introduced the Wavenet (high-speed internet) fleetwide / on all ships. The service allows faster uploading/downloading of big files, watching Netflix movies, social media sharing, music, and video live streaming (Spotify Facetime, Skype). Oceania ships serve an extensive vegan menu and offer smoothie bars with cold-pressed raw juices at Lido Deck. Many of Oceania's South America sailings are lengthy, with some extending for as many as 24 to 30 nights.
Other culinary adventures are a key part of Oceania’s effort to appeal to all age ranges. On Vista, there are 17 new culinary tours on top of an already robust lineup of cooking classes. Executive chef Kathryn Kelly says, in various ports, foodies will head to the market (like the main open-air agorá on Corfu, Greece), with shopping assignments and euros from Vista chefs.
Oceania typically sends one of its seven ships to Asia every winter for Asia-focused sailings out of such cities as Bangkok, Singapore and Tokyo. The line typically also offers one or two sailings each year out of Cape Town. Cabins and suites are thoughtfully designed, though, for longer voyages, you might need to take advantage of onboard launderettes as cabin storage might be tight. Each night, there's a show in the Vista Lounge, either a guest performer or a typical cruise ship song and dance show by the onboard performers. One of the new shows on Vista was choreographed by Britt Stewart, a professional dancer who's worked with "Dancing with the Stars."
The majority of Oceania's stock was sold in February 2007 to the NYC-based Apollo Management. The next month Oceania made a memorandum agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct two 1260-passenger newbuilds. The contract was finalized in June 2007, with delivery dates scheduled for January and July 2011.
Cabin carpeting is only made from naturally-occurring wool colors and not dyes that passengers can have allergic reactions to, and butter and flour for the onboard croissants are imported from France. The recently-introduced new base fare, “simply MORE,” also includes round-trip flights, airport transfers and a beverage package for all guests in the cabin. Even a three-week cruise earns just one credit, which means it can take some time to reach the first elite tier — Bronze, which requires five credits.
In July and August, Oceania has day sailings to Iceland and Greenland, followed by day voyages departing from NYC, Boston, and Montreal, with overnights in Montreal, Quebec, and NYC. In May 2019, by the OceaniaNEXT program were introduced fleetwide 200+ plant-based dining menus. The new items are available (upon request) in "Grand Dining Room" and "Terrace Cafe" at breakfast-lunch-dinner, and also dinner-only in all specialty restaurants. The Oceania cruise line serves the industry's upper-premium market, and as a brand is positioned between its luxury and premium segments.
The new water bottles will be available on each ship since April 2, 2019 (Riviera), April 19, 2019 (Marina), May 1, 2019 (Regatta), May 19, 2019 (Sirena), May 30, 2019 (Nautica), and June 19, 2019 (Insignia). Grand Dining Room (aft restaurant on Deck 5) on each ship received new premium dining furniture (leather chairs with metallic bronze threading) and new crystal chandelier. Martinis (piano bar lounge on Deck 5) was redesigned, new silver-white marble bar top and walnut paneling were added. Pool Deck's raw juice and smoothie bar serve a variety of healthy drinks - like cold brew lattes, green smoothies, chia cashew yogurt bowl, acai berry bowl.
It also features an ice bar where customers wear parkas while sipping drinks. Each of the vessels also offers real Broadway shows in big, state-of-the-art theaters, sprawling spas, casinos that fill half a deck, dedicated children's play zones, and more than 2,000 rooms. Note that the last four ships in the Prima-class series, due to debut between 2025 and 2027, are being redesigned to be bigger than the first two ships in the series.
For those with money to burn (pricing on Norwegian Encore recently was $99 per person for a day pass), the Vibe Beach Clubs are lovely, secluded deck-top hideaways. However, there's a downside for everyone else on board the ships that have them, which is that they take away from the deck-top lounge space available to everybody else. The go-kart tracks (now on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy) are quickly becoming Norwegian's signature can-you-believe-this-is-on-a-ship attraction, and they truly are impressive. The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks.

Also, sailings on sister lines do not qualify for Latitude Rewards cruise points. The company dates back to 1966 when it got its start as a Norwegian shipping company. Today, it has become one of the more popular mainstream cruise brands and is part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which also includes the Regent Seven Seas and Oceania brands.
Norwegian Sky
Norwegian is the world's fourth-largest cruise line by passenger capacity, with 19 ships that together offer 56,780 berths. Deck-top attractions include several pools, whirlpools, waterslides, a basketball court and a jogging track. On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track. On each of the vessels, you'll find more than half a dozen eateries, including several main dining rooms, a casual buffet, a diner-style pub, a steakhouse, an Italian trattoria and a French bistro.
On January 1, 2020, NCL became the industry's first major company to eliminate single-use plastic beverage bottles fleetwide (via partnership with the 2012-founded JUST Goods Inc). If a spa experience is what you’re after, consider booking a Spa Suite, Mini-Suite, or Balcony Stateroom. These relaxing rooms are located close to the Mandara Spa and include access to the Thermal Spa Suites, sauna, hydrotherapy pools, steam room, and heated loungers.

However, overlaid across most vessels are high-end suites and services that are at a luxury level, and the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers. Its largest vessels are among the biggest cruise ships at sea (they must be, to accommodate everything mentioned above). If you want an intimate cruise experience, Norwegian probably isn't a good choice.
Meet The Fleet Built for Freestyle Cruising
It's a look that carries over to a bevy of high-end eateries, including Nama, a new-for-Norwegian sushi restaurant with a design that is as sophisticated as the sushi it serves. Also striking is the look of a version of Le Bistro, Norwegian's signature French eatery, that can be found on both of these vessels. Both of the spaces are built around three massive crystal chandeliers costing nearly $100,000 that hang down to the floor — a showstopper of a design element. Norwegians's second and third ship, the Starward and Skyward, were the first newly built ships designed for the cruise line.[5] Like the original Sunward of 1966, they had the capability to carry automobiles through a well-concealed stern door.

Are you unsure if you want to sail on a megaship with 4,000 or more people but still want a vessel with a good amount of features and activities? Perhaps most notably, balcony cabins on the ship have an unusual design that includes curved walls, rounded bed corners, and a sink and vanity area that is in the main living space (for all to see), separate from a closed-off toilet area. The toilet area is behind a translucent door that some cruisers find less private than they had hoped. Unveiled in 2010, it was originally supposed to be the first of a series of up to three similar vessels.

The inaugural season in Northern Europe (August 17 through September 13, 2022) includes 10-day Baltic itineraries leaving from Amsterdam and Copenhagen. (April 22-October 15, 2023) NCL Alaska schedule lists 4 ships (Sun, Jewel, Joy, Encore) and 5- to 9-day itineraries out of Seattle WA, Vancouver BC, and Seward AK. After her first summer season in NYC, NCL Encore returned to Miami for 7-day Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Roatan Island, Harvest Caye, Costa Maya, Cozumel. Also sails day Panama Canal cruises with visits to Puerto Plata, Kralendijk, Willemstad, Oranjestad, Santa Marta, Cartagena, Colon, Puerto Limon. From homeport Miami, the ship operates roundtrips (Sunday departures) on 7-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries with call ports San Juan Puerto Rico, St Thomas USVI, and Tortola BVI. In October 2025, the ship starts an Eastern Caribbean program with 5- and 7-day roundtrips from Miami.
They also mark a more upscale turn for the line, with more space per passenger than earlier Norwegian ships and lots of suites. On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian's four relatively new Breakaway Plus-class vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line's premier offerings. While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant, Oasis-class ships, they are firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants. They are the Norwegian vessels most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. The line's nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (and even more with every berth filled).
Like the former vessels, the Dawn-class ships have around a dozen food-serving venues, including three main restaurants, a casual buffet, a Brazilian churrascaria (barbecue) restaurant, a French restaurant and a teppanyaki eatery. You'll find many of the same eateries, bars, lounges and entertainment venues on the Breakaway-class ships that you'll find on the Breakaway Plus-class vessels. The slightly smaller size of these vessels means there's just a tad less "stuff" on board. With Prima-class vessels debuting this year and on into the upcoming years, you can find the latest and greatest in cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL's "Premium All Inclusive" deals were introduced on April 3, 2017, and include all cabin categories. The new offer includes 5 additional benefits for passengers booking a selection of port-intensive longer voyages (9 nights or longer) in all worldwide destinations.
Earn one point for every night you spend on a sailing and double points in suites or The Haven category accommodations. The full roster of onboard amenities can be found on the Norwegian Cruise Line website. Latitude Rewards awards members with points based on each night they sail, and they can earn bonus nights when booking certain categories of suites. You can find cruise bargains for as low as $350 on four-night cruises, but if you want to splurge and do a longer cruise, expect to pay as much as $4,600 or more (especially if you book a suite or a Haven category room).
What you won't find on the ships, because of their smaller size, are all the gee-whiz attractions such as go-kart tracks, laser tag courses and large water-park areas that Norwegian has put on its bigger vessels. If you can't live without those sorts of features on a cruise ship, then the Jewel class probably isn't for you. Norwegian Cruise Line also says the Prima-class vessels offer the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship — including more total pool deck space than any other ships in the brand's fleet. One of two Breakaway-class ships, Norwegian Getaway was built by Meyer Werft in Germany and, at the time of its debut, was the ninth-largest cruise ship in the world. It featured a range of new amenities specific to its class, such as restaurants helmed by celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian and Grammy and magic-themed entertainment areas. In June 2019, NCL announced its exclusive partnership with Scarpetta Restaurants via LDV Hospitality (USA-based boutique hospitality company specializing in unique restaurant and bar experiences).
If you're thinking of booking a Norwegian cruise, an important thing to know is that there is a wide variation in the size and style of the vessels in the line's fleet. Following the Breakaway Plus Class, the most innovative and successful class in the Company’s history, Norwegian Cruise Line announced in 2017 the next generation class of ships with Prima Class. The new class will build upon the brand’s legacy of freedom and flexibility found across its fleet and feature a host of cutting-edge designs that will further elevate its already award-winning guest experience. Along with the name change, the ship also received new livery and extra features at that time, including the addition of a casino. Built by Meyer Werft in Germany, Norwegian Encore was the last Breakaway Plus ship.
Norwegian has also thoroughly done away with the concept of big main restaurants with fixed seating. During the winter, the line will move many of its vessels to North America to operate sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas. It also sends a few ships to Asia, Australia and South America, and it'll typically keep a single vessel in Europe, too. Instead of a few big main restaurants with fixed seating times, Norwegian ships offer a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times — just make a reservation. At 75,904 tons, Norwegian Spirit is less than half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships, and it carries just 1,966 passengers — more than 2,000 fewer than the Norwegian biggies.
The additional perks are 250-min internet package, 120-min phone package, US$50 shore excursion credit (per call port), up to GBP 75 hotel credit (in select call ports) and up to GBP 150 flight credit. In January 2023, NCLH announced its newly-established brand “Experiences At Sea”. The new program is a partnership with the NCL's subsidiary "Sixthman Festivals at Sea" and NCL’s CM&I division (Charters, Meetings & Incentives). Experiences At Sea is managed by Anthony Diaz (Sixthman's CEO and CM&I's Senior VP). Voyages are usually themed on music (Rock, Country, Pop, Blues, Broadway celebrity performances, etc), also LGTBQIA+/Atlantis Events, Comedy Influencers, Sports, and others. The itineraries are in the Caribbean (roundtrips from Miami) and all visit NCLH's private islands - The Bahamas' Great Stirrup Cay, and Belize's Harvest Caye.
